NICE is the second largest city in the PACA region (Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur) behind Marseille. The city of Nice is located between the sea and the mountains. So the Nicois can enjoy a dive in the Mediterranean during summertime or will go skiing in the Alps every winter. The Mediterranean city of Nice is part of the Riviera and is located close to the Italian border and the Principality of Monaco. Its international airport, the third largest airport in France, serves more than 117 destinations in 40 countries.
Nice stretches from the seaside to the hills. The Promenade des Anglais borders ‘La Baie des Anges’ . On the west side, the town is limited by the Var Valley and on the east side by the ‘Mont Boron’. The different districts of Nice each have its own architectural characteristics. The older neighbourhoods around the castle and close to the sea have an Italian-inspired style with colourful buildings while the more inland areas include Haussmann-style buildings.
Nice is a cultural city and offers many museums on its territory. In the field of art I mention the Chagall Museum and the Matisse Museum or the villa Masséna located on the Rue de France and the Museum of Modern and contemporary Art art and Villa Arson. The Archeological Museum is composed of 2 sites, the site of Cimiez and that of Terra Amata and allows the visitor to discover the archaeological past of the city of Nice.
Nice also has a national theatre, an opera house, a conservatory, two conference centers, a university and several business districts. The city of Nice is a cultural and dynamic city.
Among the highlights of the cultural calendar of Nice, its famous carnival, which takes place every year in February and attracts tourists from around the world. The Nice Jazz Festival takes place every year in the summer. But apart from these well-known events, about 2000 other festive, cultural and sporting events punctuate the life of the city. The Nice international Half Marathon is a qualifying race for the French championships. The Paris-Nice cyclist tour takes place in mid-March of each year. The marathon Nice-Cannes allows participants to run a marathon on the coast between the Promenade des Anglais and the Palais de Festivals de Cannes. The Tennis Open is held at the Imperial Park and is organised before the fortnight of Rolland Garros. At the last Ironman France in Nice, the triathletes represented more than 52 countries. Each year, the Prom ‘ Classic, welcomes more than 7 000 runners on the Promenade of the English.
The city of Nice is one of the sunniest cities in France. The inhabitants of Nice live much of the year outside thanks to its Mediterranean climate. The sea is never far away and a seaside walk on a summer evening or in the rising Sun is a real pleasure.
The city offers many squares, parks and green spaces. For those who like dominating views, the parks on the heights like the Park D’Estienne D’orves or the Canal of Gairaut and the Saint Michel area can be a good alternative.
